The Director General of the Ministry of Finance, Ilan Rum, has received sharp criticism today in the defense budget department by the Ministry of Defense and IDF. In a letter at the General Accountant Conference in Jerusalem, Rom said: “The defense spending must have a ceiling, and sometimes it seems that the ceiling is so high.

ROM, who was previously working as a senior Mossad officer, stressed that although the economy has given “required support” to defense, and will continue to do so “until the decisive victory and of course until all the hostages are brought to the homeland”, it is time to change the approach, in the wake of military achievements. He said: “Since the outbreak of the iron warfare, in 2023-2025, the defense budget has expanded a lot,” he added: “This is a huge amount that the citizens of Israel need for services, infrastructure and growth.”

ROM was martyred with a major change in the threats group as a basis for calling for simplification of defense. He said: “The main threat from Iran has been destroyed, or delayed significantly. Hezbollah has become weaker and the strong army that was once was no longer: Hamas, which is still being defeated, weaker and more fragmented than ever; in Syria there is no army or state.” He explained that “coordination does not mean giving up safety – it is a condition for sustainable security.”

ROM is particularly criticized the IDF administration in the backup days. “The economic administration has not been determined for the pre -trial days, without any controls, and it often varies from the rules of appropriate management,” he claimed. He said, “The dispensation of the backup days of any person who wants a legal tender without serious consideration and responsibility has consequences for the entire economy.”

ROM’s comments come at a time when the Ministry of Finance is forced to strengthen the updated budget 2025 in Knesateet that will expand government spending by 31 billion NIS and the financial deficit is enlarged to 5.2 % of GDP, in order to deal with the continuous cost of war.

The updated budget in the phase of the Knesateet Finance Committee, before it was finally approved by Knesateet Glenum. However, this may be not the last word. The additional amount aims to cover the processes that have already ended, while the current process of invading Gaza City is not included in the review to the budget, and there may be another breach of spending by the end of the year.
