Sonoco Products Company has consolidated metal packaging units and rigid paper containers into a single, geographically organized consumer packaging framework.
The new structure consists of two divisions: Consumer Packaging in the EMEA/APAC region, and Consumer Packaging in the Americas.
Sean Cairns has been appointed Head of Consumer Packaging for the EMEA and Asia-Pacific region (Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific).
Ernst Heinz will serve as President of Consumer Packaging Americas.
Both will report directly to Sonoco President and CEO, Howard Coker.
Cairns joined Sonoco in 2008 and previously served as President of Global Rigid Paper Containers, where he managed operations throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia.
He has more than three decades of experience in the packaging sector, including 13 years in Crown’s EMEA metal packaging division.
Haynes, who previously led Sonoco Metal Packaging North America — a unit created after Sonoco’s 2022 acquisition of Ball Metalpack — has been with the company since 1997.
During this time, he held multiple leadership roles in both the consumer and industrial sectors.
Rodger Fuller will continue in his role as Chief Operating Officer and will relinquish his interim role as CEO of Metal Packaging EMEA.
He will assist with the leadership transition and remain involved in key customer relationships during the integration process.
The transition of Sonoco’s consumer packaging segment will be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
The company’s industrial paper packaging business, led by James Harrell, will not be affected by the restructuring.
“Our consumer packaging segment will be a business representing steel, aluminum, paper, closures and components,” Coker said.
“This new structure will create a simpler, more efficient operating model that will also allow our teams to be less concerned about the backbones we deliver to our customers. I truly believe this integrated structure – geared geographically – will lead to greater innovation, collaboration and growth opportunities.”
Founded in 1899, Sonoco employs 22,500 people and operates 270 facilities in 40 countries.
