My First Bitcoin Goes Global, Empowering Educators Worldwide

The organization will continue to develop curriculum, create digital platforms, and strengthen communications between teachers around the world.

“Our mission remains the same,” Dennehy adds. “Independent, impartial Bitcoin education empowers people, encourages critical thinking, and builds freedom for the long term. Bitcoin is the tool, education is the path.”

This step represents a new phase for the initiative. Through teacher training, open resource sharing, and support of community-led projects, My first bitcoin Aiming to ignite a global movement. My first background on Bitcoin

Founded in August 2021 by John Dennehy, Mi Primer Bitcoin My First Bitcoin started as a small community-led project in El Salvador with the goal of empowering individuals through Bitcoin education. A soft-spoken thinker, Dennehy saw education as a way to restore personal agency and sovereignty, especially in a world where people often felt powerless.

The idea took root during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Dennehy spent long walks in New York thinking about society’s challenges. He concluded that the solution lay in education, so he first traveled to Ecuador to teach his friends about Bitcoin.

However, pandemic restrictions have made in-person participation difficult. Soon after, Dennehy learned of El Salvador’s historic adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender and moved there to support the country’s efforts.

Upon landing in El Salvador, Dennehy formulated the organization’s mission and lesson plans, and recruited local students and teachers. He has made community leadership a core principle, ensuring that all teachers are Salvadoran to better connect with students. The first class had only one attendee, and was held in a yoga studio, but the initiative has steadily grown. By the end of the first month, five students were participating regularly.

In 2022, Dennehy and his team formalized their curriculum into a “Bitcoin Diploma” program. The diploma includes ten lessons covering monetary systems, Bitcoin basics, wallets, nodes, mining, security, the accelerator network, and the future of Bitcoin. By the end of that year, 38 high school students in El Salvador had received their diplomas.

Since then, the organization’s influence has expanded globally. In 2023, Mi Primer Bitcoin Launched an independent Bitcoin teacher node network, which now includes more than 65 projects in 35 countries. These initiatives range from circular economies to local encounters, united by six core principles: independent, neutral, community-led, Bitcoin-only, high-quality education focused on empowerment rather than profit.

In May 2025, the nonprofit received a $1 million grant from Jack Dorsey’s Start Small program to expand its global efforts, including enhancing its Bitcoin diploma and introductory courses, teacher workshops, its online school, and a community center.

Despite the funding, Dennehy emphasized that the nonprofit would never accept government funding and carefully examine other sources to maintain independence.
