Supermarket giant Morrisons will close 103 outlets across the UK this year – including cafes, florists, pharmacies and department stores – in its latest effort to streamline operations and refocus investment on core growth areas.
The closures form part of a broader restructuring strategy to “accelerate growth” and “optimize operations”, following rising cost pressures and what chief executive Rami Baitieh described as “significant cost headwinds” since last year’s autumn budget.
The company confirmed that 50 Morrisons cafes will close across the country, along with 17 convenience stores, 13 florists, four pharmacies and all 18 Market Kitchens, an in-store restaurant concept launched to serve fresh meals.
In addition, 35 meat tables and 35 fish tables are also expected to close as part of the overhaul. Exact closing dates for the market kitchens will be announced later this year.
“These closures are a necessary part of our plans to rejuvenate and revitalize Morrisons and enable us to focus investment in areas that customers really value,” Petitia said.
In most locations, our cafés have a bright future, but some locations face local challenges – and in those locations, closing and reallocating space is the only sensible option.
He added that the company will seek to establish partnerships with “external specialists” in some locations to maintain local services.
Morrisons reported pre-tax profits of £2.1bn in the year to October 2024, rebounding from losses of £919m the previous year and £1.3bn in 2023.
However, the supermarket chain still faces rising energy and staffing costs, as well as new regulatory and tax burdens in the wake of the government’s recent fiscal measures.
“Consumers are feeling the pressure,” Petitia said. “We continue to help clients make the most of extended family budgets while managing the increasing impact of new legislation and cost inflation.”

Morrisons said the closures will help redirect investment towards growth areas such as price competitiveness, loyalty schemes and store modernization – but analysts warn the decision highlights the continuing pressure on UK retailers navigating rising costs, changing consumer habits and post-pandemic high street challenges.
