Key notes

  • The expansion leverages energy from the Itaipu Dam in Paraguay, making the site the largest renewable mining facility in the country by 2026.
  • Hive’s global hashrate rose from 6 EH/s to nearly 22 EH/s in 2025, with plans to reach 25 EH/s by the end of the year.
  • Despite the operational momentum, Hive stock fell 3.58% on October 21 after a volatile month marked by a 28% single-day rise earlier in October.

Hive Digital Technologies has finalized an agreement to build a 100MW hydroelectric data center at its Yguazú site in Paraguay, marking a major step in its plan to ramp up global bitcoin.

Mining capacity will reach 35 exahashes per second (EH/s) by 2026.

The project is an extension of Hive’s existing operations in the region, which began with the acquisition of Bitfarms’ Paraguay operations in January 2025. It will bring the total renewable mining capacity at the Paraguay campus to 400 MW, making it the largest facility of its kind in the country. The new phase will use power from the Itaipu Dam, which is known for its low electricity costs and reduced carbon emissions.

Operational scope and strategic partnerships

According to Hive’s statementsthe company increased global Bitcoin mining capacity from 6 exahash/s at the beginning of 2025 to just under 22 exahash/second as of October, and is targeting 25 exahash/second by the end of the year.

Construction on the upcoming 100 MW expansion is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with full operation expected to be completed in the third quarter of that year. Along with infrastructure growth, Hive plans to increase its HPC and AI operations five-fold, a trend that began in 2024, driven by the hype surrounding AI.

These plans are linked to strategic collaborations with partners, including Bell Canada, to strengthen its computing footprint and promote long-term diversification of AI workloads.

Impacts on local economy and mining leadership

Hive’s move reinforces Paraguay’s position as a Bitcoin mining hub, highlighting the economic and environmental benefits. The Yguazú site already produces 8.5 bitcoins per day, supporting local employment and investment in community infrastructure.

By leveraging renewable energy, Hive maintains low operating costs, helping maintain profitability as competition drives global hash rates higher. It is worth noting that Hive is one of the few mining companies investing in increasing its hashrate, according to Matthew Siegel, head of research at VanEck.

This movement is fueled by the pro-crypto regulatory stance taken by the Paraguayan government, which provides an additional incentive for such investments by exempting the use of mining energy from taxes until 2027. This only applies to regulated cryptocurrency mining operations, which are highly reactive against illegal Bitcoin miners.

The stock is down 21% weekly despite operational milestones

The recent developments of Hive Digital Technologies in Paraguay, coupled with the completion of new facilities, did not have a significant impact on the performance of the stock markets. On October 21, shares were down 3.58%, but rose nearly 28% in one day in early October 2025, with a weekly decline of more than 21% and a year-to-date gain of roughly 85%. This new achievement not only represents an important step forward for Paraguay’s clean energy sector, but also strengthens its position as a regional hub for mining innovation. It highlights HIVE’s continued commitment to infrastructure development and sustainable progress in Latin America and in the Bitcoin mining industry.
